It is well known that the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is one of the most severe complications in infertility treatment. It appears in 2-5% of cases. OHSS development is caused by ovarian stimulation during IVF treatment.

Earlier the only way to avoid the OHSS was to cancel the stimulation or to refuse to stimulate high OHSS risk patients especially patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.

A few years ago we started to use rather simple but at the same time very efficient new method of OHSS prevention. It was invented by the clinicians of our clinic. Now we are very satisfied with the results of the research that showed 99% efficiency of the method. The method is simple: daily use of intravenous dexamethasone started on the day of the ovum pick-up.

Dexamethasone is a well-known medicine. Its short-time administration is not harmful for the patient. Dexamethasone deminishes blood vessel penetration and prevents appearance of ascytis, hydrothorax, hydropericard and even microtrombosis formation.

The OHSS simply does not appear!

Patients don`t need hospitalisation. Doctors should perform ultrasound and blood tests monitoring to make sure the Dexamethasone dosage are correct.

The experience and results of our research has been presented at the XX Annual International Conference of Russian Association of Human Reproduction”Reproduction technology today and tomorrow” in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, September 6-7, 2010; at the 13th World Congress on Controversies in Obstetrics, Gynecology & Infertility in Berlin, Germany, November 4-7, 2010; at the 27th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction & Embryology in Stockholm, Sweden, July 3-6, 2011.

Results of the next research will be presented at the 4th Asia Pacific Congress on Building Consensus in Gynecology, Infertility & Perinatology which will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, November 24-27, 2011.
